Random thoughts and questions

Find here a few thoughts after having to miss the reunion:
  • I've been amazed through these past several months at the amount of effort and energy invested in the effort by Diane and Judy and the others. Thanks, friends.
  • We Lorenzo-ites grew up in the best of times in the best of places in the world.
  • Do you ever "Google" the names of old Lorenzo friends, hoping to find someone you haven't seen in 40 years?
  • Do you grin when you see an old classmate's name come up when your cell phone's ringing?
  • Have you noticed that the older we get, the more we consider "my" classmates to be several years younger and several years older than just my bunch?
  • The hard work of a few folks made it possible for all reunion attendees to have a good time at the reunion. Affirm them and thank them. It's not a high-paying job.
  • The older we get, the more we enter chapters of life I choose to call, "new normal."
  • Does anyone remember a man in Lorenzo whose nickname was "Dump"? I do.
  • Does anyone remember a terrible wreck near the cemetery in the 50's in which a few of our high school students were hurt badly?
  • Think for a minute: Can you remember what the White's Auto store smelled like? What was the owner's name?
  • Remember Mike Lopez? He could pop his gum like nobody I've ever known. I wonder where he is now.
  • Now that we're old and gray (some gray-er than others), it would be interesting to know how many of us use an alarm clock to wake us up each morning. I don't. I wake up at 6:00 every day without an alarm.
  • Does anyone remember a funeral we had in the school auditorium in the late 50's? What was the school administrator's name?
  • Who had the loudest motorcycle in town in the early 60's? This friend took the guts out of the muffler on his Cushman Eagle. What is his name?

You are taxing my overworked brain!!! The wreck was Kay Carter and Jan somebody. I don't remember the funeral. The only one I remember for an educator was Billie Zumbrun, but that was held at the Methodist Church. I am sorry to say I don't remember Mike Lopez either. No, I don't use an alarm clock and never have. I use Olan!!! He has the unique gift of being able to wake up whenever he needs to. I don't even know how to set an alarm clock. When I traveled, I always used the hotel service to wake me up.

Move over Suzanne, my friend and pal! Haaaaa!!!! Jan Watson was the other girl in the wreck. I don't remember the administrator's funeral, but I'll remember he/she when I hear the name. Mike Lopez ('64)worked at O'Rear's for years and married Josie Cantu. Haskell Stevens owned White's Auto. Both Roy Swetnam and Tommy Taylor had Cushman's, but I think you are referring to Tommy since he had to buzz by my house going to and from town. Yes, I remember Dump Ballinger(?)because I always thought that would be a great name to use in a book about Lorenzo. I use a radio alarm. I woke up to KSEL or KLBK back in the day. I so hated missing the reunion, too. Well, I can't remember the other questions you asked and I can't go back because I don't know how without losing what I've already written. Short termemory?...GONE!! Ha! I love that place and every solitary human being who lived there, today and yesterday. I get teased sometimes about it, buttttt!!!!! I wish we could get this blog going again. I loved the flashbacks and the current info on people. Yes, and thanks soooo much to anyone who helps with reunions. I know it is a hard job. Thanks to all!!!!

A note from Herschel McMillan, sent to me by email. Good stuff.
-Gerre-

Gerre, Reading some of the blogs (by the way you have done an excellent job and I am just getting start at looking at some of the material) and there was some questions that got the mind to thinking. Did you ever know a man named "Dump"? The thought comes to mind and you may be a little to young to remember, but that brought another memory about "Tink". Tink O'Rear, if you remember was the custodian at Lorenzo Schools for many years. Willie Williams, the coach, forgot his keys to the gym one day and sent me and a couple more boys to "Tink" to borrow his keys. (Joe may have been in this bunch but I can't say for sure at this time) We go into the school and run up to "Tink" saying Willie wants to borrow his keys to the gym. "Tink" without looking up said "A man in hell wants ice water but he doesn't get it!!!!" He left what he was doing, went to the gym and unlocked it but never once let those keys out of his grasp. I have thought of this happening down through the years many times.
Seem the more mess this world seems to be gettting into, the more you think we had it pretty good in the good old days. Take care and stay well. I will be looking into the material as days go by. Thanks for sending.

Thanks Gerre for bringing some new thoughts to the Lorenzo blog. When you have lived in Lorenzo as long as I have you remember lots but unfortunately you also forget twice as much. Do remember Dump Ballinger. Dump lived I would guess most of his life her in Lorenzo. He worked for the Gray Brothers and always was willing to do the dirty work.He served in the army during World War II."Hack" Stephens had the Whites Auto store but don't remember any particular smell.Hack had a daughter Jo Ann. She was in the class of '53.I should remember the funeral but thats one of those things that as slipped away.Enjoy the Blog site I wish more old Hornets would use it.

Thanks to all of you for the great comments. I love reading the blog. I find out some neat things I didn't know and remember many things I thought I had forgotten.

Gerre- you are a classic! Thank you for loving Lorenzo like so many of us do. You have been very instrumental in bringing us all together and keeping us there. You are much appreciated.

I remember the Kay and Judy wreck on the curve by the cemetary. My sister Beth was around their age and was upset for a long time. Things like that just wasn't supposed to happen in Lorenzo.

I get up to a radio alarm clock at 5:00 every morning. Back in the day my alarm to get up for school was my mother.

I remember Mike Lopez because he married one of my classmates- Josie Cantu.

And yes- I do find myself considering all my old Lorenzo high school friends as my classmates no matter what year they graduated or left good ol' LHS. We all belong to each other! The thread of friendships that run through our little hometown is still strong and growing. I will be forever grateful that I grew up in Lorenzo.

Herschel and Walter - keep the faith - our "little" Ex-Hornet Association has decided to invite the classes of 1950-59 to our association if you are willing to come onboard. We are looking forward to our next reunion in 2011and hope that you will both attend along with many of your classmates.

In reference to Kay Carter, and Jan Watson; yes, I remember Kay had a broken ankle, but Jan went out and back through the windshield. Her face was folded back on top of her head. Jack Canon held her face on all the way to Lubbock. she lost an uye, but by the grace of God, she later walked across the stage to receive her diploma. She go a standing ovation.
Inrference to Mike Lopez; My Dad was returning from Lubbock after having the left front fender repaired from a wreck, and because of Lorenzo's 50th Year Celebration on main street, he went around the block and Mike barreled out of the alley, creaming the left front fender. Dad kept his calm (never saw him lose it)
